How to Harvest your Flower Seeds in 3 Easy Steps
Autumn is quickly approaching. Instead of being sad about losing our flower gardens, we can look forward to next year's blooms by harvesting seeds right from our own yard. If your garden has many annuals that won’t grow back next year, save a little extra money by saving your seeds from this year’s growth for the following growing season. This is also a great way to reward yourself for a strong growing garden! It’s so easy, you can even get kids involved with this fun garden “chore.”
Step 1: Find the Seeds
Look for your flowers that have gone to seed. The flower stalk will look dry, light brown, and crispy. There will be small pods (where the flower originally bloomed from) along the stalk. Keep in mind, each seed pod looks a little different depending on the flower. But you’ll soon know if you’re looking in the right place with the next step! Try choosing seeds from your best performing flowers if possible. This will help ensure your seeds will be successful next year.
Step 2: Remove the Seeds
Remove one of the seed pods and gently give the pod a squeeze. Use a rolling motion with your fingers to loosen the seeds out. You might get one seed or you might get ten. Again, each seed will look a little different depending on the flower.
Step 3: Store your Seeds
Once you have your collection of seeds, keep them in a cool dry place and out of direct sunlight. Label your seeds with their appropriate flower name or create your own mix. It’s best to use the seeds in the following year.
